Dolce&Gabbana: Rare Objectivity, Excellent Vision

People have one major tendency that hinders the development of beauty as a science: we find it taboo to identify which features are manifestly desirable or undesirable. For instance, the claim that white skin is attractive (somewhat racist) will never be admitted publicly by the great majority of men–no matter the number of confirming studies done in private. Anyone who makes this claim will almost invariably be told that “beauty is in the eye of the beholder,” or other such partialities. Of course some aspects of beauty are subjective–these I try to avoid. But there are particular features of a woman’s face and body which have been deemed attractive constantly and in every culture (ex. hourglass figure and baby face). There seems to be an evolutionary reason that men are drawn to, say, Jessica Alba and repelled by muscular weightlifters.

In order for the analysis of beauty to become more than a pseudoscience, it must follow a rigorous process of exclusion and rejection rather than one of search and acceptance. I believe that Dolce&Gabbana, among other organizations, has applied the concept quite well.
